Yellow-rumped Mannikin - Lonchura flaviprymna

Other Names: Yellow-rumped munia. Yellow-tailed finch

Size: 11-12cm

Habitat: Tall reeds and woodlands with tall seeding grasses. Also located in and around mangroves.

Distribution: Northern Australia ranging from Derby (West) to Eastern Queensland Border.

Food: Long stalks of seeding grasses. (Germinating millets etc) Live insects and termites.

Nesting: In the wild nests are generally located close to the ground in and amongst tall grasses and reeds. In the aviary nests are fairly higher and tend to prefer building their own nests. However they will use nest boxes but be sure to offer them at different heights.

Breeding: Being very similar in appearance, finding a pair can be tricky. Plus they are known to be rather picky about the right partners.If possible let them select their own partners. Notable success in aviaries over cage breeding. The average clutch consists of four to six eggs with the young leaving the nest at around 21 days.

Sexing: Male and Female colouring is virtually identical. Sexual identification can be determined by males call.

Notes:

Being located in waremr climates, the yellow-rumped mannikin is susceptible to colder climates and should not be kept below 18 degrees c.
